STI’s in the over 40’s

mid life crisis

A lot of things have happened recently in the UK; the Brexit, Chris Evans finally quitting Top Gear…etc. It looks like we’ve got ourselves into a bit of a pickle.

To top it off, because of recent cuts to STI testing services, STI’s are on the rise including the ghastly Gonorrhoea which has increased by 11% in the last year and syphilis, which has increased by 20%!
“Oh, but it’s all those young whipper-snappers gallivanting around town” you proclaim, but alas, there seems to be a greater percentage of Sexually transmitted infections for men over 45 years of age.

So, why are older men getting STIs?
It could be down to a range of reasons; these include:

Cheating:
Although some may not like to admit it, having unprotected flings can give you and potentially your unknowing long-term partner a nasty surprise. Make sure you get yourself checked out as soon as you can, to ensure everyone stays healthy and safe.

Divorce & Separation:
So you’re a free man? Go forth and have as much fun as you like, just make sure you’re playing it safe. You may have previously had safe sex with your last partner, no condom, no problem! But try not get too relaxed when you’re playing the field and always wrap up to avoid the nasties.

Lack of knowledge:
Do you remember anything in that sex education class a gazillion years ago? Do you know what the symptoms of chlamydia are? If you’re sitting there thinking “no”, then this is probably a good hint that you may need to do some further reading on my other blogs (found here).

So how can I protect myself?
Apart from the obvious WEAR A CONDOM, ahem. Make sure they are in date and have been kept somewhere cool to prevent breakage.
Get tested. Don’t wait to get symptoms then get checked, the earlier the detection the better.
Do you feel embarrassed about vising a young GUM clinic or your local GP? Why not go somewhere private and confidential, where you don’t have to give your real name and have a password on your file. Try  The Walk in Clinic for all your private needs.

Until next time gents, keep it safe & classy.
