How to last longer in bed

Couple being intimate in bed

Sex doesn’t have to be slow but it doesn’t have to be fast either. From Kegels to open conversations, switching it up and practice, there are several proven ways that men can last longer in bed.

Did you know there is an orgasm gap between men and women? According to the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, 95% of heterosexual men said they usually or always orgasm on sex, whilst only 65% of heterosexual women said the same.

In ‘The New Naked: The Ultimate Sex Education for Grown-Ups’, author Harry Fisch MD reveals that 45% of men climax in two minutes or less. On the other hand, women need more than 15 minutes of sexual activity to reach orgasm.

Men are finishing quicker than their partners and leaving them behind! Don’t be that guy … Check Your Chap can help you to last longer in bed with these tried and tested ways to last longer!

Keep an open dialogue

One of the best ways of lasting longer in bed is to know and understand what your partner wants. If you open a dialogue and talk about this comfortably, your intercourse will reflect the same thing. You will be ready and prepared for the duration, what your partner will say and what you both will do.

But remember, just because you’re trying to last longer, doesn’t mean it should become an all-night marathon – that stuff only happens in movies!

Understand your own body

Understanding what your body wants and doesn’t want is another way to train yourself to last longer. Regular masturbation lets you find your pleasure spots, what you like during sex and gets you more connected with your body. Masturbation also improves your arousal response leading to improved sex and self-confidence.

Masturbation before sex

For some men, masturbating to completion an hour or two before sexual intercourse can delay your next orgasm. This tip is dependent on the length of your refractory period – the time it takes for you to recharge after an initial orgasm. If you have a long refractory period, we recommend skipping this tip as you may stop yourself from achieving orgasm with your partner if you pre-masturbate.

Don’t go all in!

Sex isn’t just about penetration. In fact, if you just go all in straight away, that may be the reason you’re not lasting long at all. In fact, penetration doesn’t even have to be on the menu. Mix up your routine with some foreplay, oral sex or some cuddling to pace yourself and gain a greater appreciation for intimacy as a whole.

Medical delay

Commonly known as Viagra, Sildenafil helps men who suffer from erectile dysfunction as well as those who don’t maintain erections. In fact, a study by the International Journal of Urology found that Sildenafil can also treat premature ejaculation.

Manual delay

You can also learn to last longer by employing manual delays aka edging. This is when a male who’s about the ejaculate, grabs his shaft right below the head and gently squeezes for 10 seconds. This pressurises the urethra, constricts blood flow and represses an orgasm. Doing this as part of a masturbation routine or during a sexual session, allows you to prolong sex but also train you for climax management.

Consider sex therapy

A study by Japanese Psychological Research found that those who suffer from premature ejaculation saw significant improvements in their condition after 8-12 therapy sessions. These sessions allow you to discuss and pinpoint sexual issues rooted in psychology and some you may not even realise you were suffering from.

Try a new position

Have you switched up your style? Don’t just stick to one position as different forms provide different stimulation factors. Maybe you are particularly sensitive to your current go-to hence why you aren’t lasting long at all. Experiment and change it up regularly. For reference, missionary is a low impact arousal position, whilst doggy style is a high impact arousal position. Plus, the breaks in between switching work as great breathers to centre yourself.

Look after yourself

If you aren’t looking after your body, do you expect it to have your back in bed? Regular exercise will improve your blood flow and increase your stamina in bed. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking as this can lead to impotence and erectile dysfunction.

Use a Condom!

Condoms don’t just prevent STIs, they also decrease penis sensitivity helping men last longer in bed. In fact, the thicker the condom, the less a man will feel the sensation of penetration, meaning it will take longer to achieve orgasm. The thicket condoms you can usually find ate 1 millimetre thick, so why not give it a shot?

One step further? Try a numbing condom!

Did you know that condom brands Durex and Trojan offer numbing condoms that help you last longer in bed? These condoms contain 5% benzocaine, a compound that reduces sensitivity in the penis and lets you last longer in bed!

Power up your pelvic floor

You can strengthen your pelvic floor and achieve mastery over your sexual organ by practising Kegel exercises. This is when you squeeze your pelvic floor muscles in the same way you do when you stop peeing midstream. If you do this regularly, your pelvic floor gets stronger and so do your erections and orgasms. Kegels also help combat premature ejaculation by direct control over the penis.

What are your next steps?

If you’re still struggling to last in bed after trying some of the tips above, it is time to consult a therapist as a couple or even a GP as an individual. Your problem could have its root in physiology which means a change in lifestyle, diet and habits could be very beneficial. Do you have any life hacks or pro tips for lasting longer in bed?
