Those crazy cats across the pond have done it again. They’ve come up with a national celebration day that completely baffles Chappie. December 12th 2014 is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day in the USA. On this special day, people across the country discard their usual garb in favour of donning the ugliest Christmas jumpers they can get their hands on.
The organisers of this event say that they want to put the fun back into Christmas and create an opportunity for everyone to laugh at themselves, and each other.
This special day is sponsored by a company called Tipsy Elves who, believe it or not, sell ugly Christmas jumpers. Their range, it must be said, is very impressive in its awe-inspiring lack of taste. Some of their sweaters sport multi-coloured bobbles all over them while others have some slightly outrageous designs. There are jumpers depicting a T-Rex at Christmas, a yeti, Jesus Christ, a granny being run over by a reindeer, a decapitated snowman, Santa Clause writing the words ‘Merry Christmas’ in pee on the snow and plenty of reindeer humping. Chappie was particularly shocked by that last one because we don’t like to talk about that sort of thing round here. Oh no.

Ugly Christmas sweater mania has also made one woman famous, according to the Express newspaper’s website. Apparently, eBay seller, Deb Rottum, started selling the most hideous Christmas jumpers ever online when she was complimented on the awfulness of one she was wearing. She then went on to make a huge variety of ghastly jumpers with tinsel sewed on to them, baubles stuck on and even life size dolls attached to the front of them. Her fame came due to the fact that, on her page, she modelled these jumpers and appeared to have a “terrified” look on her face. When asked about this, she replied, “I am purposely smiling big and making my eyes look crazy because these are crazy sweaters.” If you say so, dear.

So, this 12th December bring some butt-ugly Christmas cheer into your life by honouring National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Apparently, some people have competitions to see who can wear the ugliest sweater. A rather nice idea might be to charge people to enter the competition and give the money to charity. Now that really would be getting into the Christmas spirit.
