Sex can be expensive, even for those of us who don’t pay for it (which you never should). By the time you’ve bought the dinner, the cinema ticket, the taxi fare home, you’ve already spent the best part of an Arsenal match ticket, and that’s before you’ve even slipped a piece of latex over your member. For men lucky enough to get through more than one condom at a time, it can be even more expensive than smoking (although way more fun and not as bad for you).
Thankfully, there are plenty of places you can pick up free condoms.
If you’re not sure where to find free johnnies, the best place to start is your local GP’s surgery. Some of the best doctors have jars of condoms in the reception area for you to help yourself to, but these are far and few in between. If you find one, you have struck gold. Others have a friendly receptionist whom you can ask where to find free contraceptives – which is what you should call them, by the way, if you’re too embarrassed to ask for ‘condoms’.
The next port of call will be your local family planning clinic, which may be adjoined to your GP’s surgery, or it may be a separate entity altogether. It may also be masquerading under a different name, such as a Community Contraception Clinic, but it’s the same thing. These guys are more likely to give away free johnnies than doctors, but their opening hours are usually shorter.
Finally, before succumbing to that overpriced pack of Durex from the 24 hour corner store, try your local sexual health or GUM clinic. Not all of them will be giving away free condoms – although the ones with any sense will anyway, since bagging up is the first step to preventing STIs.
